Underhand Barbell Row

Pull · back · intermediate

Underhand Barbell Row — start positionStart
Underhand Barbell Row — end positionFinish

How to do it

Take a shoulder-width underhand grip, hinge to about 45 degrees with a flat back, and row the bar to your belly button keeping the elbows tucked close to the ribs.

Muscles worked

Primary: back · Also works: biceps, rear delts

Equipment

Barbell, Full gym

Common mistakes

  • Hyperextending the elbows at the bottom because the supinated grip encourages a full drop
  • Standing progressively more upright as the set goes on until it becomes a shrug
  • Rowing to the chest rather than the belly, which loses the elbows-close advantage

Variations

  • Underhand row with a one-second pause at the top
  • Underhand row using an EZ bar to soften wrist strain

Can't do this one? Swap it for

Take care: ABROFIT automatically removes this movement for anyone who has flagged a lower back problem. If that's you, use one of the swaps above and speak to a physio before loading it.
