How to do it

Stand on the band with hands about shoulder-width apart in front of your thighs, then pull the handles up the front of your body by driving the elbows out and up, stopping at chest height.

Muscles worked

Primary: shoulders · Also works: traps, biceps

Equipment

Resistance bands

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the hands up to the chin with a narrow grip, which forces the shoulder into a pinching position
  • Letting the wrists bend sharply as the hands rise
  • Shrugging the shoulders to the ears at the top instead of stopping when the elbows reach shoulder level

Variations

  • Wide-grip band upright row
  • Single-arm band upright row
