Hold a sturdy upright with one hand and lean away until your body is at about 20 degrees, then raise the dumbbell in the free hand out to shoulder height.

Common mistakes
- Leaning so far that you cannot control the bottom of the rep and the arm just swings
- Letting the supporting arm pull you upright as you lift, cancelling the added bottom-range tension
- Shrugging the working shoulder toward the ear at the top
