How to do it

Hold one dumbbell vertically against the upper chest with both hands, keep the knees softly bent and hinge the hips back until the torso is near parallel, then stand by driving the hips forward.

Muscles worked

Primary: hamstrings · Also works: glutes, lower back

Equipment

Dumbbells

Common mistakes

  • Letting the dumbbell slide away from the chest, which turns the lower back into the limiting factor
  • Going lower than the hamstrings allow so the pelvis tucks and the spine rounds
  • Turning it into a squat by letting the knees travel forward as you descend

Variations

  • Seated version on the end of a bench
  • Pause two seconds in the bottom

Can't do this one? Swap it for

Take care: ABROFIT automatically removes this movement for anyone who has flagged a lower back problem. If that's you, use one of the swaps above and speak to a physio before loading it.
