Barbell Good Morning

Hinge · hamstrings · advanced

Barbell Good Morning — start positionStart
Barbell Good Morning — end positionFinish

How to do it

With the bar racked on the upper back and the knees softly bent, hinge the hips straight back until the torso approaches parallel, then drive the hips forward to stand.

Muscles worked

Primary: hamstrings · Also works: glutes, lower back

Equipment

Barbell, Full gym

Common mistakes

  • Using anywhere near squat weight — this lift is a long lever and needs a fraction of the load
  • Letting the upper back round, which collapses the whole position at once
  • Turning it into a squat by dropping the hips down instead of pushing them back

Variations

  • Seated good morning
  • Safety bar version for an easier bar position

Can't do this one? Swap it for

Take care: ABROFIT automatically removes this movement for anyone who has flagged a lower back problem. If that's you, use one of the swaps above and speak to a physio before loading it.
