Snatch-Grip Deadlift

Hinge · hamstrings · advanced

Snatch-Grip Deadlift — start positionStart
Snatch-Grip Deadlift — end positionFinish

How to do it

Take a very wide grip on the bar so the hips start lower and the torso further forward, then pull the bar up the legs by pushing the floor away and lock out standing tall.

Muscles worked

Primary: hamstrings · Also works: glutes, upper back, traps

Equipment

Barbell, Full gym

Common mistakes

  • Keeping conventional-deadlift weight on the bar, which the longer range does not allow
  • Letting the upper back round because the wide grip makes staying tight much harder
  • Yanking the bar off the floor instead of pulling the slack out first

Variations

  • From blocks to shorten the range
  • Straps so the wide grip is not the limiter

Can't do this one? Swap it for

Take care: ABROFIT automatically removes this movement for anyone who has flagged a lower back problem. If that's you, use one of the swaps above and speak to a physio before loading it.
